Joel Harris grew up chasing his older brother. The 23-year-old from San Angelo, Texas, is the younger sibling of seven-time NFR qualifier Ty Harris, and he learned the tie-down roping trade junior rodeoing across Texas. Only a few years into his ProRodeo career, Joel has already stepped out of that shadow and into the world-title conversation himself.

“My dad started us when we were 3 and 4 years old,” Harris said. “He made it happen for us.”

In just his second trip to the National Finals Rodeo, Joel Harris finished a career-best fourth in the tie-down roping world standings with $334,786. He earned $193,931 inside the Thomas & Mack—the second-most of any calf roper at the 2025 NFR—and placed in seven of 10 rounds.

The Peso Show at the 2025 NFR

The centerpiece of Harris’ Vegas was back-to-back go-round wins aboard Daddys Shiner Cat, “Peso,” the iconic buckskin owned by Logan Bird. In Round 6, Harris blasted a 6.8 for $36,668; the next night, he answered with a 7.5 to win Round 7 and push his NFR total past $137,000 on the way to $193,931.

“It’s so surreal,” Harris said after the second win. “Each time you win one of these rounds, it gets more and more real. You appreciate it more. I know that this one could very well be my last, there are no promises, so I just wanted to really enjoy it.”

Harris credited the horse for the freedom to stay aggressive.

“Nothing he does takes away from your ability to make a good run,” Harris said of Peso. “Everything is helping you. I know I’m going to catch up when I need to, and he’s going to give me the right start and the right go.”

Beyond the two wins, Harris was second in Round 1, sixth in Round 2 and second in Round 5, a run of consistency that reflected a roper who felt himself leveling up.

“I think I’ve improved in a lot of areas,” Harris said. “You only have 10 nights to showcase your work. Things happen fast in this sport. But I feel like I’ve improved, and that’s always my goal.”

A Rocket Rise

Harris only started entering ProRodeos in 2022, winning early in Amarillo, Seminole, Big Spring and Chickasha, Oklahoma. In 2023, he was a Resistol Rookie of the Year contender and won both the average and year-end titles at the Columbia River Circuit Finals—beating brother Ty for the crown aboard Ty’s palomino mare Chucara Sal, “Sally.”

The 2024 season was his breakout: wins at Pasadena, Lynden and Hermiston, a runner-up to Ty at RodeoHouston, and a first NFR that ended with him seventh in the world and two round wins on Peso—Round 5 and a Round 9 he tied with Ty.

The Family Behind It

Harris never ropes far from his family, who fill the stands and light up the big screen at the Thomas & Mack.

“My dad has been the biggest reason for our success, and then my brother, my mom, my wife, my younger siblings,” Harris said. “I have the best people surrounding me.”

His younger siblings Wyatt and Cheyenne rounded out the rodeo family that raised him. That competitive edge shows up away from the rodeo road, too. In October 2025, Harris beat a stacked field of the sport’s best to win the average and $21,000 at the Shane Hanchey Invitational in Giddings, Texas.

What’s Next for Joel Harris

Harris opened 2026 the way he closed 2025—winning—with a co-championship at the Redding Rodeo in California and a climb to No. 4 in the tie-down roping world standings with $117,677 won. Joel Harris is no longer just Ty’s little brother, he’s now chasing a gold buckle of his own.
