One Month Left: The State of Calf Roping’s 2026 Rookie Standings

Kyan Wilhite has led the Resistol Rookie race wire-to-wire since May, and with the regular season closing Sept. 30 the Clovis, New Mexico, calf roper carries a $38,954.87 rookie lead, sits 13th in the world at $119,228.61 as the only rookie inside the top 15, and is one of just two rookies with a swing at the $241,667 waiting at Puyallup and Sioux Falls.

Kyan Wilhite: The Rookie Inside the NFR Top 15

There has been one constant in the 2026 tie-down rookie standings, and it has never been in doubt. Kyan Wilhite has sat No. 1 in every rookie snapshot since the middle of May, when he opened the summer at $45,062.46, and he has more than doubled that number to $119,228.61 heading into the final stretch.

The more remarkable line is where that money puts him against the whole field. Wilhite is 13th in the world standings—not the rookie standings, the world standings—which means he’s the only rookie in the class staring down a spot inside the Thomas & Mack. He has never been outside the top 13 all season, climbing as high as seventh on July 6.

Wilhite’s total hasn’t moved since late August, holding at $119,228.61, while the bubble underneath him keeps rising. He enters the final weeks with a $10,132.56 cushion on the No. 15 seat and a $13,269.90 margin over the No. 16 spot.

Here’s the piece that keeps Wilhite in control: he’s in at Puyallup. When the Playoff Series field froze Aug. 24, Wilhite made the cut as the No. 14 seed, which means the one rookie on the bubble gets a swing at the same $75,000 the men chasing him are swinging at. The threat to his top-15 spot comes almost entirely from below, from Puyallup-qualified ropers like Tom Crouse, Tyler Calhoun and Dylan Hancock.

The Resistol Rookie of the Year Race

The rookie race is not, on paper, mathematically finished. The Governor’s Cup finals in Sioux Falls pay $34,000 to win—one check that alone would shave the rookie lead to $4,954.87—so a monster last month from Clemons paired with a shutout from Wilhite could theoretically swing it. But that math cuts the other way, too: both rookies are entered at Puyallup, and the only road to Sioux Falls for either of them runs through a top-four finish there. Wilhite doesn’t just hold the lead; he’s standing in the same field Clemons would have to climb through to catch him. Barring a collapse, the 2026 Resistol Rookie of the Year is his to lose.

Brodey Clemons and the Second Rookie Ticket

The only other rookie with a shot at the richest money left is Brodey Clemons, the Weatherford, Texas, calf roper sitting second in the rookie standings at $80,273.74. Clemons is 27th in the world—roughly $28,000 outside the top 15, which is a tough gap to close in three weeks—but he punched a Playoff Series ticket as the No. 21 seed off the Aug. 24 freeze, making him the second and last rookie in the Puyallup field.

Every other rookie in the class is on the outside of that Playoff money looking in. Puyallup and Sioux Falls draw their fields off Playoff Series points, not season earnings, and only Wilhite and Clemons cleared the bar.

The Circuit-Finals Rookies

While the top two chase world standings money, the middle of the rookie class is quietly stacking circuit finals berths.

Colton Suther leads the way. The Palo Cedro, California, man is third in the rookie race at $64,211.45 and, more tellingly, sits first in the California Circuit at $24,842.95. Sam Lewis (fourth in the rookie race, and the hottest late mover with $6,283.41 added in the rookie standings) holds fifth in the Texas Circuit. Avery Matheson and Cason Kingsbury are each third in their circuits—Southeastern and Mountain States—and Jayden Broussard, Coy Skocdopole, Tate Talkington, Lane Watson and Dalton Porch all sit inside their circuit’s top 12.

Circuit standings only count money won at that circuit’s rodeos, and the two rookies with by far the most season earnings—Wilhite and Clemons—sit outside their circuit-finals cut. Wilhite is 20th in the Texas Circuit despite leading the entire rookie race, and Clemons is 34th, because the money that made their seasons came at rodeos outside the Texas circuit.
