Hammons built her lead early and has sat comfortably at the top, which is both the strength and the risk of her position. At a projected $61,227.88 she still leads the class, but she went the last week without a check and watched $11,379 of cushion turn into $4,999.
Closing in on that lead was Ohrt who went 2.4 for second at Castle Rock, Colorado, for $5,482 and tied for fifth in the first round at Dodge City, Kansas, with a 2.6 for $898. Totaling $6,380 on the week.
Rawlinson’s week was the loudest of anyone of the rookies. She was 1.8 to win Phillipsburg, Kansas, for $5,269 and 2.1 for third in Abilene, Kansas, for $3,446—two of the fastest runs anyone turned in all week, both in Kansas. At $8,715 she out-earned Ohrt on the week and is $2,400 behind her.
Which is the real fight. Second and third are closer to each other than either is to the lead.
Rookie Only Money
Two rodeos on the schedule are rookie-only—the Resistol Rookie Roundup and Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo’s Rookie Rally—and the money they pay counts toward the Resistol Rookie standings but not the world standings. That wrinkle is doing more work in this race than the leaderboard lets on.
Hammons has $2,139.66 of rookie-only money. That accounts for 43% of Hammons’ $4,999.48 lead.
It runs the other direction on Rawlinson. She has $2,356.61 of rookie-only money, which is most of why she looks close: the official rookie standings have her $2,400.16 behind Ohrt.
Further down the list it decides positions outright. Stephanie Braman has $4,635.93 in rookie-only earnings, 24% of her season total. Lucy Richards has exactly $4,000, which is 36% of hers and most of the reason she is the No. 12 rookie while sitting No. 165 in the world standings. Simone Park’s $3,000 is 62% of her year.
Figures are the difference between the July 31 rookie standings file and the July 31 world standings file. “Extra entries” is the difference in rodeo count between the two, which is how the rookie-only rodeos show up.
The Efficiency Gap
The rodeo counts are where this race gets interesting. Through the July 31 rookie file, Rawlinson had entered 60 rodeos, Hammons 47 and Ohrt 37.
Run the money against the entries and the order flips. Ohrt is averaging roughly $1,520 a rodeo, Hammons about $1,303, and Rawlinson about $897. Ohrt is chasing the rookie lead on 23 fewer rodeos than Rawlinson and 10 fewer than Hammons.
That cuts both ways. Rawlinson’s 60 rodeos—tied with fellow rookie Stephanie Braman for the most in the class—mean she has been on the road hard enough to be standing there when a week like this one came along. Ohrt’s lighter schedule means every check has to count, and it also means she has the most room left to enter.

The $26,000 Cliff
Below Rawlinson the race changes character entirely. Avery Landry of Arnaudville, Louisiana, sits fourth at a projected $27,860.98, which is $25,967.26 out of third. Barring something extraordinary, the Resistol Rookie title is a three-woman conversation.
Landry did add to her year, going 2.5 for fourth in Mesquite, Texas, for $487. Behind her, Sage Dunlap of Bear Creek, North Carolina, had the better week—a 2.7 for sixth at Castle Rock for $2,056 and $53 at Phillipsburg—and closed to $3,845.79.
The steadiest name in the class might be Stephanie Braman. The Refugio, Texas, rookie has entered 60 rodeos, tied with Rawlinson for the most of anyone, and sits seventh at $19,187.60 without a check in the last week.
Who Moved This Week
Sixteen rookies cashed a check at a rodeo that ended on or after July 31, for $33,356 in rookie money. Macie-Rae Warken of Dublin, Texas, made the biggest climb—three spots to No. 8—on a $3,386 week built from a tie for third in Idaho Falls, Idaho, (2.4, $2,579) and a tie for 10th at Preston (2.6, $807).
The most consequential run relative to a season belonged to Katlyn Hooper. The Crescent, Oklahoma, rookie was 2.3 for fourth in Phillipsburg, Kansas, for $2,634, which added 71% to her year in one run: she came in at $3,700.68 and projects to $6,334.68. Haven Wolstein of Helena, Montana, tied for the win at the West Yellowstone Wildhorse Stampede with a 2.4 for $1,508, and Grace Felton of Fallon, Nevada, tied for fifth at Preston with a 2.4 for $1,857.
Rookie Standigs vs. World Standings
No rookie is inside the projected top 15 in the world standings. Hammons is closest at a projected No. 21, and she just fell three spots there without roping. Ohrt projects to No. 22 and Rawlinson to No. 27. Those ranks use world-standings money, which excludes the rookie-only earnings described above.
That means the Resistol Rookie championship and a trip to the National Finals Breakaway Roping are two different races right now, and only one of them is within reach for this class. The rookie title will be decided among Hammons, Ohrt and Rawlinson. Closing the $9,844 that separates Hammons from the projected No. 15 hole in the world standings, in under two months, is the taller order.
