That third slice is the quiet engine of the whole program. Nominating a Riata-eligible colt isn't just an entry fee — it's a position in every check that horse's generation writes at the Championships.
There's also a $100,000 Showcase Horse Sale Incentive on the line, paid in full to the highest-earning graduate of the Riata Showcase sale at this year's Championships. If you bought a horse out of that sale ring, this is the week it can pay for itself.
Entry deadlines
Entries are online only, at RiataBuckle.com, so registration information can be verified against the horse's papers.
- On or before Sept. 18: $1,000 per roper
- Sept. 19–22: $1,200 per roper, with a $200 late fee per side
- After Sept. 15: roper or horse changes carry a $100 change fee
E-check payments carry a one percent fee; credit cards, four percent. Draw-outs and refunds go back to whoever paid the entry fee.
The Rope Horse Rewards Championships
This is the significant structural addition for 2026. Five Rope Horse Rewards Championships run in conjunction with the Riata Championships, and every horse that places in the aggregate qualifies for the Rope Horse Rewards Finals at the Ariat WSTR Finale in December.
A few rules worth reading twice:
- Nominated Riata horses can enter the RHR Championships without being enrolled in Rope Horse Rewards. But to be eligible for the Finals, a Riata-nominated horse must be entered and enrolled in RHR before the start of each division.
- There's a $20,000 Riata Bonus in each of the four RHR Championships — $6,000 apiece to the highest-placing Riata head and heel horse, and $4,000 apiece to the second-highest.
- The RHR qualification events double as WSTR Finale Super Qualifiers.
- Any check a Rope Horse Rewards program horse earns in an RHR Championship event unlocks a discount on 2026 Ariat WSTR Finale entry. WSTR rules apply, and contestants have to enter both the Rope Horse Rewards Vegas Finals and the WSTR Finale no later than Oct. 15 to keep the eligibility and the discount.
- Draw-ins are available in Rope Horse Rewards events for a $40 fee. Entry limits, age restrictions and heeler caps vary by division.
RHR Championships can be entered online through Sept. 22 for the entry discount, or onsite — check the daily schedule for cutoff times.
The proxy horse change
New for 2026, and easy to get caught by: every proxy/helper horse must be entered and enrolled in Rope Horse Rewards in order to enter the Riata Championships. That's a change from prior years and it applies across the board.
The rest of the proxy framework holds. If either member of a team is the owner of record on a nominated Riata horse that's three or younger, including weanlings, that owner can ride a proxy. One proxy per nominated young horse, one rider per proxy, family members allowed, and no proxies in the Open Futurity. A proxy/helper form has to accompany the entry with the name and registration number of the young Riata horse being substituted for. A Riata-eligible horse can never be used as a proxy.
Ropers on winning proxy horses collect their aggregate winnings less a 10 percent commission.
Verification
Winning teams may be DNA tested at Riata's discretion, and all horses must carry current registration with a breed association. Ropers, trainers and agents riding nominated Riata horses need registration documentation submitted at or before the time of entry, showing ownership or a current transfer application.
