The record-breaking 236 score that won last November’s AQHA Senior Heeling was aboard Pablo’s Time—an 11-year-old son of One Time Pepto—and so was his finish under Trey Yates in Senior Heading to rake in $29,412. A month earlier, Clay Smith had won the Riata Pro Heading Futurity reserve championship on a 5-year-old daughter named One Time Peppy Rey to bank $32,000.
It’s safe to say this powerhouse sire is “rank,” considering he was already known for siring Nu One Time Blues—the Snaffle Bit finalist that earned $351,128 at heeling futurities—plus roping futurity standouts Steviesprideandpearl and Pepinstep. And his cutting progeny have earned more than $19 million, including NCHA Futurity champs One Time Royalty (LTE $447,543) and One Rockin Pepto (LTE $243,317).
The red roan stud is by legendary NCHA Futurity champ Peptoboonsmal and out of One Time Soon, a $1.3 million cutting producer by Smart Little Lena. “One Time” had the fluid movement, extraordinary conformation and profound presence that made Matthews Cutting Horses a world-class breeding program.
“He moved like they taught me how a Thoroughbred should move,” the late Jeffrey Matthews told Quarter Horse News in 2020. “They’ve got to have strength behind, and they can’t be too heavy in front—just like a racehorse.”
