A New Era in Cheyenne: Inside the 2026 Team Roping Format, Qualifications and More

The 2026 Cheyenne Frontier Days will feature a new qualification process and a new format, news that shocked much of the rodeo world earlier this year.

New in 2026, the Cheyenne Frontier Days will not feature a large team roping slack to determine the teams for the performances. The field was also limited to 78 teams this year with a specific qualification process.

Who qualified for Cheyenne in 2026?

There were four ways for team ropers to qualify for the Cheyenne Frontier Days in 2026.

The new Cheyenne Frontier Days format

The qualifying performances

The field of 78 teams will be divided evenly across the first six performances, with 13 teams in each. The top five from every performance will automatically advance to the Semifinals. If a tie for the fifth position occurs, the tie will go to the team with the higher position in the 2026 world standings based on money won seven days before entries close.

The Wildcard rounds

The remaining eight teams from each qualifying performance will get one more opportunity to advance through one of two Wildcard rounds. Teams from the first three performances will compete in the Wildcard slack on Monday, July 20, while those from the last three performances will compete Thursday, July 23. The top three teams from each Wildcard round will move on to the Semifinals, completing a 36-contestant Semifinal field with 12 competitors in each of the final three performances.

The Semifinals

From there, the top four teams in each Semifinals performance will advance to the Finals, creating a 12-team finals. If a tie occurs for the final qualifying spot, the tiebreaker will go to the team with the fastest time from the qualifying round. If teams remain tied, the higher-ranked team in the 2026 world standings (as of June 11) will advance.

The Finals

The order for the Finals will be determined by money won at Cheyenne, with the lowest-earning team roping first and the highest-earning roping last. If the Finals end in a tie for first, money will be split evenly among the tied teams. If first place in the Finals is tied, the event champion to receive awards will be the team with the most money won. If still tied, the tie will be broken by fastest time in the Semifinals, and if still tied the fastest time in the qualifying performances will break the tie.

Team roping payout at the 2026 Cheyenne Frontier Days

The team roping at Cheyenne has a purse of $200,000, or $100,000 per side.
