Tucker Field Earns $10K San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Youth Scholarship Aboard Rio Rojo River Cat 

Tucker Field, 16, of Granbury, Texas, turned a standout performance at the Cinch RSNC San Antonio Super Sort into a life-changing moment, earning theinaugural $10,000 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Rated Youth Scholarship.Thehomeschooled sophomore secured the honor after accumulating the most points in the EQN Sports #18 Rated Youth class.

Field also claimed the class championship alongside partner Jaden Rondy, with the duo sorting 20 head in 86.94 seconds to earn $1,030 in addition to the scholarship payout.

For Field, ranch sorting has been a lifelong part of his world. Growing up in a family deeply involved in the sport, he has spent most of his life around cattle and horses, watching his parents produce sorting events across Texas

“I’ve just been in it since I was 1, 2 years old,” Field said. “My mom used to sort with me; made me sit in front of her while we sorted.”

A Special Horse

At the center of Field’s success is his trusted mount, the 2016 gelding Rio Rojo River Cat (Little Dulces Rey x A Smooth Closer), known around the barn as “Big Boy.” The gelding has proven himself both in and out of the sorting pen, becoming a key partner in Field’s growing success.

“Getting to ride this horse,” Field began, when asked about his favorite part of competing. “That’s really about it. He’s just that awesome.”

Field purchased Big Boy as a 6-year-old, and the gelding quickly became a family favorite. Field’s father, Tim , and brother, Trever , have also won money on the horse in ranch sorting competitions.

“Big Boy has been a true blessing to me with his athletic ability and being able to carry me through my runs,” Field said. “His ability to be the same horse every time you get on his back, and run after run, has truly helped me win.”

Beyond the sorting pen, the versatile gelding has also proven himself as a dependable ranch horse, working cattle in the pasture and earning Top Horse accolades in multiple Working Ranch Cowboy Association ranch rodeos.

San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Supports Youth Athletes

Winning the scholarship at one of the country’s largest Western events made the accomplishment even more memorable for Field.

“It was an amazing experience winning at such a big event at the San Antonio Stock Show,” he said.

For the first time in 2026, the scholarship was awarded to the eligible rider who earned the most points in the EQN Sports #18 Rated Youth class. To qualify, contestants must be Texas residents, 18 years old or younger as of Jan. 1, 2026, and enrolled in a public school, private school, or homeschool program.

Field has not yet decided how he will use the scholarship funds, but with a trusted horse beneath him and years of experience already under his belt, the young Texas sorter has a strong foundation for whatever path he chooses next.
