Medows grew up showing pleasure horses in the all-around, following in the footsteps of his parents, before his family eventually made the transition into reining. Although the disciplines were different, his early experience taught him valuable lessons about horse mechanics, movement and what a good horse should feel like. That foundation continues to influence the way he approaches horses today.

In this episode of The Ride, Medows talks about his transition from the all-around into reining and the horse that ultimately inspired him to pursue the discipline seriously. He also discusses developing horses at home in Missouri, learning through trial and error and why he believes there isn’t one training formula that works for every horse. For Medows, patience and adaptability are key, especially when working with young horses.

Medows also talks about Perfect On Ice, a stallion he and his family bred and developed from their own program. Despite illness, injuries and several freak accidents, the horse continued to progress, eventually making his way to Casey Deary ahead of the 2026 Run For A Million. With only a few weeks together, Deary and Perfect On Ice won the $100,000 Open Shootout with a 230½, earning a spot in the following year’s $1 Million Competition. Meadows shares what it was like watching a horse he’d developed for years succeed on that stage and why he believes the horse’s exceptional mind played such a big role.
