Riata Buckle

The Riata Buckle is a team roping stallion incentive program created to support and grow the rope-horse breeding industry, modeled on the Pink and Ruby Buckle programs that do similar work for barrel horses. Founded through a partnership between Denny Gentry and the Pink and Ruby Buckle's creators, the program lets stallion owners enroll their studs in the incentive; offspring by those Riata stallions become eligible to compete for the program's money, provided owners pay a $200 annual nomination fee per horse. Unlike most futurities aimed at professional trainers, the Riata operates more like a jackpot open to all skill levels — it's entered as a team, uses slide ropings, and even allows teams to include an unnominated horse alongside an eligible one, so non-Riata horses can still share in roughly half the purse. The inaugural event, held Nov. 3–6, 2022, at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, paid out $2 million and immediately became one of the richest ropings in the sport, shaking up the industry's stallion rankings overnight — one previously mid-tier sire jumped to fourth on the list after his offspring won $150,000 at that first event.

The Riata Championships have continued to grow each year, run in conjunction with a handful of qualifying events across the WSTR and Patriot calendars — including WSTR's Heartland, Big Daddy, and Super Qualifier stops, plus the Patriot Team Roping and the WSTR Finale — where the top head and heel horse from each mini-qualifier earns a full entry into the Championships. The 2025 edition ran Sept. 24–28, with regular entries closing Sept. 1, and added new features that year including a 7 & Under age-eligibility incentive in the #9.5, three total entries per roper per Championship, and $50,000 guaranteed to the winner of each incentive division. The event pairs with the Riata Showcase Horse Sale, held each December at the South Point Equestrian Center in Las Vegas alongside the WSTR Finale, where consigned Riata-eligible horses go up for sale. Horse earnings and pedigrees are tracked through AQHA's QData system and Equine Network's Global Handicaps, giving the industry a clearer picture of which bloodlines are producing winning rope horses — part of what organizers describe as an effort to help define a true rope-horse breed rather than relying on horses passed over from other disciplines.
